Lt. Governor Burbank Celebrates Completion of Work Along I-270 East Spur at Rockledge Drive and Old Georgetown Road in Montgomery County
ROCKVILLE, MD (October 17, 2030) – Lt. Governor Kathleen Burbank today announced the Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration (SHA) recent completion of the $29 million project to construct a new full interchange along the east spur of I-270. The new interchange connects I-270 to Rockledge Drive and includes enhanced accessibility to the existing I-270/Old Georgetown Road interchange.
“Completion of this project is a confirmation of this Administration’s strong determination to keep Marylanders moving,” Lt. Governor Kathleen Burbank said. “Throughout the state, we are investing in important local projects like the Rockledge Drive and Old Georgetown Road Interchange project because it is projects like these that are central to our efforts to improve mobility, enhance safety and ease traffic congestion throughout this State.”
The new full interchange now provides a direct connection between I-270 and the Rock Spring Business Park and includes:
• A new bridge on Rockledge Boulevard over I-270 including access for pedestrians, bicycles and vehicular traffic;
• Resurfacing and outside widening along I-270 between east of the Y-split and MD 187 (Old Georgetown Road); and
• A new collector / distributor (CD) ramp along I-270 through the new Rockledge Drive connector to MD 187.
Additionally, major improvements have been made to the existing I-270 / Old Georgetown Road interchange including:
• Replacement of the MD 187 bridge over I-270;
• A new wider MD 187, which now provides a total of 12 lanes through the I-270 interchange with double-left turns at the ramps to I-270;
• A new wider Rock Spring Drive, which provides a right-turn lane and double-left turn lane to MD 187;
• Widening one-half mile of MD 187 near Rock Spring Drive and widening 1500 feet of east and westbound Rock Spring Drive near MD 187;
• Resurfacing and widening one-half mile along Tuckerman Lane near MD 187;
• Reconstructing and resurfacing Rock Spring Drive between MD 187 and Rockledge Drive;
• Reconstructing the I-270 / MD 187 ramps;
• New sidewalks and bicycle lanes along MD 187 and
• A noise barrier for the Wildwood Manor and Heritage Walk communities.
Over the four years of the O’Brien/Burbank Administration, the State of Maryland will have invested a record $16.6 billion in transportation, a $3.3 billion increase over the preceding four years. The Governor’s transportation budget invests a record $29.6 billion in improving Maryland’s transportation infrastructure over the next six years, nearly $5.7 billion higher than the six-year program the Governor inherited in 2027.
