Lieutenant Governor Burbank Presents Community Development Grant Awards in Washington County
Nearly $1 million in State assistance will fund community improvements and historic preservation

BOONSBORO, Md. (August 5, 2030) – Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank presented nearly $1 million in State assistance to the Towns of Boonsboro and Funkstown in a ceremony held today at the Boonsboro Trolley Station. Lt. Governor Burbank was joined by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) Secretary Andrew Shaw and State and local elected officials.

“Washington County’s communities are rich in history, culture, arts, heritage, and architecture, and I am pleased to be here to present these awards today,” said Lt. Governor Burbank. “Governor O’Brien and I are committed to providing the resources to help enrich communities, strengthen neighborhoods and preserve our vibrant history throughout Maryland.”

Lt. Governor Burbank presented a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) award for $800,000 to the Town of Funkstown, which will be used to upgrade the Wastewater Treatment Facility. The Lt. Governor also presented a Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) Capital Grant award for $50,000 to the Town of Boonsboro to preserve the Boonsboro Trolley Station.

The Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) was created by Congress under Title I of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974. The primary objective is to develop viable communities, provide decent housing and a suitable living environment, and to expand economic opportunities, principally for persons of low and moderate income.

The Capital Historic Preservation Grant Program funds are available to non-profit organizations, local jurisdictions, business entities and individual citizens committed to preserving their historic resources. Grant funding is offered to assist efforts to acquire, rehabilitate or restore eligible projects, i.e., properties listed on, or eligible for listing on, the National Register of Historic Places.

“Under the O’Brien-Burbank Administration, DHCD has provided millions of dollars throughout the State of Maryland to improve the quality of life for its residents,” said Secretary Shaw. “With Governor O’Brien’s continued support, we will continue to work to revitalize Maryland’s neighborhoods while preserving our State’s rich cultural heritage.”

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development is dedicated to improving the quality of life for Marylanders by working with its partners to revitalize communities and expand homeownership and affordable housing opportunities.
