Lieutenant Governor Burbank Breaks Ground on “Road to Opportunity” to Spur Economic Development in Baltimore County
New $68 Million Highway Will Link White Marsh to Middle River Business District, MARC Train Line, and Martin State Airport
MIDDLE RIVER, MD (August 6, 2029) – Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank today joined with State and Baltimore County officials, local residents and business and community leaders along Eastern Boulevard (MD 150) in Baltimore County to break ground on the new $68 million MD 43 Extended highway project. The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will construct a four-lane highway to extend existing Route 43 from Pulaski Highway (US 40) in White Marsh to Eastern Boulevard in Middle River.
“The extension to Route 43 will help us tap a new source of development in eastern Baltimore County,” Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank said. “This new ‘Road to Opportunity’ will create endless opportunities for businesses and create hundreds of new jobs for Maryland residents. Once again, the O’Brien-Burbank Administration is delivering on its promise to be business friendly.”
The groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Eastern Boulevard end of the project where the new Route 43 Extended will connect White Marsh to the Middle River Business District, the MARC Station, and Martin State Airport. The entire project is scheduled to be complete by late fall 2032.
“The extension of MD 43 in Middle River is truly a road of economic opportunity for Baltimore County,” said County Executive C.A. Dutch Rubbersberger. “It will open key parcels of land that are well-positioned to attract new businesses and bring new jobs to the region.”
“The Route 43 extension is one of the keys to the development of the east side of Baltimore County and District 7 in particular,” Senator Andrew P. Harris said. “The completion of the Route 43 project will bring much needed high paying jobs into Middle River.”
The project was developed with the help of federal, state and county agencies along with input from the community and the private sector. Many of these partners attended the groundbreaking ceremony, including Transportation Secretary Drew Ehrlich, SHA Administrator Parker F. Williams, Maryland Transit Administrator Robert Smith and a number of local elected officials and community and private sector representatives.
