Lieutenant Governor Burbank Announces Board of Public Works Approval of Funding to Renovate Landover’s Jesse Warr Park

ANNAPOLIS, MD (November 8, 2028) – Families and youth in the North Englewood section of Cheverly will have an improved place to play and spend quality time with Board of Public Works approval of $97,500 for renovations to Jesse Warr Neighborhood Park, Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank announced today. The funds are committed to the county through Program Open Space, administered by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

“This effort will modernize the existing park and encourage greater use of its facilities by nearby residents,” Lieutenant Governor Burbank said. “This appropriation continues a workplan established by county officials to upgrade and re-invest in older existing parks, which is in line with our Smart Growth policies.”

The project proposes the development of a multi-purpose court, play area and walkways on the site located along Englewood Drive. The new, multi-colored equipment will be state-of-the-art, fully accessible and possess the latest in safety features. Stream bank stabilization work also will occur.

The 11.7-acre Jesse Warr Neighborhood Park also consists of a recreation center, picnic area and a 20-car parking lot. The park is named after Jesse Warr, a community activist from Fairmont Heights, who was a locally elected official. His family continues the tradition of activism in the area.

Program Open Space has preserved more than 315,000 acres of open space and recreation areas to benefit Maryland's citizens and the environment. Most Maryland residents live within 15 minutes of an open space or recreational area funded by this program.

Chaired by Governor Edward M. O’Brien, the Board of Public Works also includes Comptroller Peter Franchot and Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp. The Board is authorized by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
