ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 22, 2028) – Continuing the Administration's efforts to preserve the State's natural resources, Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank today announced Board of Public Works approval of the use of $116,876 in Rural Legacy funds for the purchase of a conservation easement on 48 acres of land in Carroll County. The acquisition is the fourth easement in the Little Pipe Creek Rural Legacy Area, which now protects more than 500 acres.More than 500 acres now protected in the Little Pipe Creek Area
"Today's action will have a profound impact on the quality of life for thousands of residents of Carroll County," Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank said. "The Little Pipe Creek Rural Legacy Area forms a buffer around New Windsor, a National Register Historic District, and additional farmland. This acquisition will further improve the area's water quality and preserve historically and agriculturally significant areas in Maryland."
Since taking office, the O’Brien Administration has preserved nearly 61,000 acres through Maryland’s various land preservation and recreation programs.
Chaired by the Governor, the Board of Public Works is also comprised of Comptroller Peter Franchot and Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp. The board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions, and other procurement actions.
The Rural Legacy Program was established to work with private landowners and land trusts to strategically preserve large, contiguous blocks of land across the State. Lands targeted for protection include endangered species habitats, agricultural lands, forests, stream buffers and historic villages and battlefields.
