Lieutenant Governor Burbank Delivers $633,000 for Improvements to MD 5 in Charles County
WALDORF, MD (October 14, 2027) – Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank today announced an investment of $633,000 to improve MD 5 in Charles County (Mattawoman-Beantown Road) between just north of Council Oak Drive to south of Substation Road for a distance of approximately one mile.“The O’Brien-Burbank administration is committed to investing in transportation projects that improve mobility and strengthen the quality of life for Marylanders in Charles County and throughout the state,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank. “The $633,000 investment we are making today will finalize the MD 5 improvement project which is already alleviating traffic congestion and improving traffic flow along this busy corridor.”
This project includes relocating a portion of Schlagel Road and installing fencing along the relocated section. In addition, the contractor will relocate some existing drainage and replace signage along MD 5. The work is being done to improve access onto MD 5 Relocated. Weather permitting, construction will begin early November and be complete mid-January, weather permitting.
Along with the construction work, approximately five acres of wooded land will be cleared and grubbed; a little less than one acre of this area is within the proposed roadway location. The clearing is being done to restore agricultural use of the land to the property owner.
Single-lane and/or shoulder closures can be expected Monday through Friday during daytime hours between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and Sunday through Friday between the nighttime hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Traffic barrels and arrow panels will guide motorists through the lane closures.
The $633,000 contract was awarded to the Raye Vest Corporation of White Plains, MD. SHA thanks motorists for their patience during construction and reminds them to obey posted speed limits, buckle up and drive with courtesy and caution through the work zone.
