Lieutenant Governor Burbank Announces Safety Upgrades at MD 17 and MD 180 Intersection in Rosemont, Frederick County
ROSEMONT, MD (October 4, 2027) – Demonstrating the O’Brien Administration’s continued commitment to traffic safety, Lieutenant Governor Kathleen H. Burbank today announced that the Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration (SHA) will implement a new traffic pattern at the intersection of MD 17 (Burkittsville Road) and MD 180 (Jefferson Pike) in Rosemont, on or about October 13. New stop signs will be placed along MD 17, creating a four-way stop condition at the intersection of MD 17 and MD 180. Currently, stop signs control eastbound and westbound traffic on MD 180 only. “The project that we announce today demonstrates the commitment of this administration, MDOT and SHA to improving motorist safety in Frederick County and throughout the entire State of Maryland,” said Lieutenant Governor Burbank. “The installation of stops signs at this busy intersection is the first in a series of steps required to construct a one-lane roundabout, which will ultimately improve mobility and safety for the motorists who use this intersection on a daily basis.”
The new traffic pattern is the first of several changes required to construct a one-lane roundabout at the intersection. The Rosemont roundabout will be the second roundabout on a state road in Frederick County. The first was placed along MD 17 in Brunswick.
Traffic within the intersection will be maintained throughout the construction process. The roadway will be temporarily widened first to allow traffic to travel unimpeded while the roundabout is under construction. Paving, overlaying and striping will be done within the roundabout. The center of the roundabout will include landscaping, including plants, grass and shrubs. The new roundabout will replace the existing intersection and flashing beacon and will enhance the safety of the roadway.
Variable message signs, traffic drums, cones and flagpersons will alert and guide motorists throughout the work zone. SHA awarded the $479,000 project to Concrete General Incorporated of Gaithersburg, Md. The project should be complete later this year, weather permitting.
SHA thanks motorists for their patience and reminds them to buckle up, stay alert, and obey posted speed limits while driving through the work zone. For any additional information, please contact Mr. Todd Hammond, Project Engineer at 301-834-8580.
