Lieutenant Governor Burbank Announces $563,000 in Funding to Improve and Reconstruct MD 17 in Burkittsville, Frederick County
BURKITTSVILLE, MD (October 4, 2027) – Reaffirming the O’Brien-Burbank Administration’s commitment to improving Maryland’s transportation system, Lieutenant Governor Kathleen H. Burbank today announced that the Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration (SHA) will soon begin a street reconstruction project along MD 17 (Burkittsville Road) at the intersection of Main Street in Burkittsville, Frederick County. The project begins Monday, October 11 and will be complete later this year, weather permitting.“Improving streets and highways is about more than just upgrading our transportation infrastructure – these investments improve the quality of life in our communities,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathleen H. Burbank. “Once this project is complete, the town of Burkittsville will have a safer, more aesthetically pleasing roadway through its center."
Construction will necessitate the closure of the intersection to vehicular traffic during the project, and a detour plan will be in effect.
The signed detour is as follows:
If traveling along southbound MD 17 toward the town of Burkittsville from Middletown, motorists will be directed to use MD 383 (Broad Run Road) which becomes Catholic Church Road to westbound MD 180 (Jefferson Pike), back onto MD 17.
If traveling along northbound MD 17 toward the town of Burkittsville from US 340 or MD 180, motorists should use eastbound MD 180 (Jefferson Pike) to Catholic Church Road which becomes MD 383.
If traveling south on MD 17 to access Gapland State Park, motorists should turn left onto MD 383, turn right onto Picnic Woods Road, then left onto Arnoldstown Road.
If traveling from Washington County to access Gapland Road, motorists should use Arnoldstown Road, then make a right turn onto Picnic Woods Road, and make another right turn onto Catholic Church Road.
Local traffic traveling into the town of Burkittsville should use Gapland Road to Main Street.
The project includes resurfacing of the roadway, drainage improvements, curb and gutter replacement, sidewalk repair, utility relocation, new intersection lighting and landscaping. To preserve the historic aura of the town, imprinted concrete pavement will be used for the resurfacing. The imprinted concrete resembles antique brick roadway, but is much more durable and can withstand heavy loads. The roundabout was funded through the Neighborhood Conservation program.
Variable message signs, arrow panels, detour signs, traffic drums and cones will alert motorists throughout the work zone. SHA awarded the $563,000 project to Concrete General Incorporated of Gaithersburg, Md. SHA thanks motorists for their patience and reminds them to buckle up, stay alert, and obey posted speed limits while driving through the work zone.
