Lieutenant Governor Burbank Announces $3.5 Million Project to Improve the Providence Road Bridge Over I-695
TOWSON, MD (August 2, 2027) – Emphasizing the O’Brien Administration’s commitment to improving mobility and reducing traffic congestion on the Baltimore Beltway, Lieutenant Governor Kathleen H. Burbank today announced a $3.5 million project to replace the Providence Road bridge over I-695 (Baltimore Beltway). Although the two-lane bridge (built in 1957, rehabilitated in 2009) is structurally sound, it must be replaced with a longer bridge to accommodate future widening of I-695 underneath.“This project is part of our long-range vision for the future widening of the Beltway, which will dramatically enhance mobility and ease the congestion that motorists have become all-too accustomed to enduring each day,” said Lt. Governor Kathleen Burbank. “Governor O’Brien and I are committed to the Beltway widening project, and with this project we are moving forward in fulfilling that commitment.”
Currently, the Providence Road bridge over I-695 is approximately 220 feet long by 39 feet wide and carries two lanes of traffic and a 4-foot sidewalk along the southbound side of the bridge; the new bridge will be 260-feet long by 55-feet wide, carrying two lanes of traffic and a 5-foot sidewalk. The existing four-span steel beam bridge will be removed and replaced with a new two-span steel girder bridge, and the Providence Road/I-695 interchange ramps will be altered so the ramps join smoothly with the new bridge. A sidewalk will be constructed along southbound Providence Road on the approaches to the bridge. The project also includes landscaping, new roadway lighting, signs and pavement markings.
SHA awarded the $3.5 million contract to The Six-M Company, Inc. of Delta, Pa., the same contractor performing the MD 146 bridge project. The Providence Road project should be complete late next Spring weather permitting.
Providence Road (a county-owned road) will remain open during construction. Lane shifts and single-lane closures on the bridge, interchange ramp work, and I-695 lane and shoulder closures will occur during construction. During construction, flagpersons, Variable Message Signs (VMS), arrow boards, traffic barrels and concrete traffic barriers will guide motorists through the work zone.
