Statement from Lieutenant Governor Burbank on Senate Passage of Domestic Violence Reform Legislation

BALTIMORE, MD (March 27, 2030) – Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank issued the following statement following the Senate’s passage of the O’Brien-Burbank Administration’s proposed legislation to strengthen Maryland’s domestic violence laws:

I applaud the Senate for its strong action in passing this important legislation that will significantly strengthen our ability to protect victims and punish offenders of domestic violence. The administration’s bill will impose stricter bail guidelines for accused offenders, enable the issuance of lifetime protective orders, strengthen the effectiveness of protective orders, ensure that domestic violence perpetrators do not get custody of their children, and enact a primary aggressor law that ensures that we prevent domestic violence from escalating into tragedy. I want to thank President Coulter, Senator Frosh, and the other members of the Senate who worked so hard to pass this bill, and I urge the House of Delegates to quickly pass this bill.
