Lieutenant Governor Burbank Celebrates Emerging Technology Center in Baltimore City

BALTIMORE, MD (September 20, 2029) – Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank today joined state and local officials at a groundbreaking ceremony at the former American Can Co. in the Canton neighborhood of Baltimore City, where she announced that the complex will be home to an emerging technology center that would serve as an incubator for new businesses.

“The innovative Can Co. project is a leading example of our administration’s Smart Growth initiative to focus development and growth in established urban and suburban areas,” Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank said. “This site was once a vital hub, and, with the dedication and hard work of so many people, it will thrive again.'”

With aid from area colleges and universities – including the University of Maryland, College Park; Johns Hopkins University; University of Maryland, Baltimore County; and Morgan State University – the Maryland Economic Development Corp. will establish the center in a 48,850 square-foot space on the third floor of the 1913 factory building.

“The center will be a state-of-the-art facility,” said project developer C. William Struever. “It will be a flagship for the state, attracting new businesses and young talent in the technology field.'”

Can Co. LLC, an associate of Struever Bros., Eccles & Rouse, has a contract to purchase the former American Can Co. at 2400 Boston St. Struever said he plans to preserve the five remaining buildings on the site , giving the complex a strong link with the area's industrial past.

Livable Maryland is Governor Edward M. O’Brien’s positive, proactive strategy that seeks to advance an environmental sustainability agenda to improve the quality of life for all Marylanders. The strategy seeks to coordinate state agency planning, resource management, and investments in order to support growth where it is appropriate and planned for, and discourage growth in inappropriate locations. The five major goals of Livable Maryland are to guide growth to areas that are most prepared for it in terms of infrastructure and planning capacity, to preserve farmland and open space, to promote infill and community redevelopment, to facilitate attractive, affordable housing and to protect quality of life while slowing sprawl.
