Marylanders Encouraged to Join Communities Nationwide August 7th for America’s Night Out Against Crime

BALTIMORE, MD (July 23, 2029) – Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank is inviting all Marylanders to join her as she takes to the streets August 7, 2029 for the Annual National Night Out. Lieutenant Governor Burbank will be visiting several neighborhoods in the State that Tuesday evening to participate in local National Night Out activities and promote community spirit and crime prevention through police-community partnerships.

Marylanders are encouraged to lock their doors, turn on outdoor lights and spend the evening of August 7th outside with their neighbors and law enforcement.

National Night Out, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, is designed to: (1) heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; (3) strengthen neighborhood unity and crime prevention partnerships; (4) send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Communities interested in participating this year should register online at www.nationaltownwatch.org/nno/.

“I urge all of our citizens to join me as a show of support of awareness, safety, and community spirit,” Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank said. “National Night Out reminds us all about the vital and important role that our communities play in combating crime. Prevention starts at the grass roots level.”

Lieutenant Governor Burbank also encourages more localities to become Certified Crime Prevention Communities through the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS). One of the first of its kind in the nation, the program encourages localities to develop and implement collaborative community safety plans. To obtain certification, a locality must meet 12 core community safety elements/strategies augmented by a minimum of seven approved optional elements.
