Lieutenant Governor Burbank Announces Board of Public Works Approval of Funds to Construct Multi-Purpose Gymnasium in Hancock
ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 22, 2028) – Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank today announced Board of Public Works approval of $397,000 in Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) Program Open Space (POS) funds to construct a multi-purpose gymnasium at Hancock Middle/Senior High School in Washington County."This new gymnasium for Hancock High School is consistent with the principles of Smart Growth because we are investing in our established communities," Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank said. "Washington County residents will now be able to enjoy physical education classes, practices and games during school hours, and a multi-purpose area for community use during non-school hours. Projects like these help communities across Maryland enhance their quality of life for years to come."
The facility has the support of the Washington County Planning Commission, who in concert with the Washington County Board of Education, Washington County Commissioners and Town of Hancock officials have already provided financial support to this project. The $500,000 project includes $103,000 in local funding.
Under DNR's Program Open Space, more than 315,000 acres of open space and recreational areas are being used for the enjoyment of Maryland residents.
Since taking office, the O’Brien Administration has preserved nearly 61,000 acres through Maryland’s various land preservation and recreation programs.
Chaired by the Governor, the Board of Public Works is also comprised of Comptroller Peter Franchot and Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp. The board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions, and other procurement actions.
