Lieutenant Governor Burbank Announces $8.1 Million to Improve the Capital Beltway in Prince George’s County
Six-mile Segment to be Resurfaced over Next 12 Months

FORESTVILLE, MD (September 28, 2027) – Reaffirming the O’Brien-Burbank Administration’s commitment to improving and maintaining Maryland’s transportation infrastructure, Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank today announced an $8.1 million project to resurface approximately six miles along I-95 between Darcy Road and MD 5 (Branch Avenue), in Prince George's County, beginning next week. In addition, ramp resurfacing will occur along I-95 at the interchanges with MD 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue), Forestville Road, Suitland Road and Branch Avenue.

“The Capital Beltway is the most important transportation corridor in the Washington metropolitan area, and properly maintaining it is critical to providing commuters with a safe and smooth ride,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank. “This $8.1 million investment is a clear demonstration of the commitment of this administration to support projects which improve the quality of life for Marylanders by ensuring that our highways and bridges are in the best shape possible.”

The project also includes safety improvements along I-95 including upgrading guardrails and installing new pavement markings. The road will be milled (surface removed), repaired and resurfaced. The work will improve pavement condition and enhance motorist safety.

Single-lane closures will occur weekdays during off-peak hours between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Double-lane closures may also occur weeknights during off-peak hours, 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Lane closures along the corridor will be restricted during special events (i.e. major sporting events).

Variable message signs and advance warning signs will advise motorists of upcoming lane closures. Barrels, cones and arrowboards will guide motorists through the work areas.

SHA awarded the $8.1 million contract to Francis O. Day Company, Inc. of Rockville. The project should be complete March 2028, weather permitting. SHA reminds motorists to reduce speeds, stay alert and use caution while driving through work zones.
