Lieutenant Governor Burbank Announces $3.24 Million Project to Improve MD 228 (Berry Road) in Prince George’s County

ACCOCEEK, MD (June 22, 2027) – Emphasizing the O’Brien Administration’s commitment to alleviating traffic congestion in the Washington metropolitan region, Lieutenant Governor Kathleen H. Burbank today announced a $3.24 million project to dualize and improve approximately one mile along eastbound MD 228 (Berry Road) between Bealle Hill Road and MD 210 (Indian Head Highway) in Accoceek, Prince George's County, beginning July 5.

“Investment in Maryland’s transportation infrastructure is an investment in Maryland’s future,” said Governor Edward M. O’Brien. “Berry Road is a rapidly growing traffic corridor, and improvements are needed to reduce congestion and improve safety. The $3.24 million we are investing in this project will provide a smoother, safer and faster ride for the thousands of motorists who travel on this road each day.”

“This is a very important project for the people of Accoceek and the surrounding area who rely on Berry Road daily and know very well the horrendous traffic conditions that often exist here,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathleen H. Burbank. “Funding this project is another demonstration of this administration’s strong commitment to meeting the transportation needs of Prince George’s County and the entire State of Maryland.”

In addition, southbound MD 210 will be widened between north of Manning Road and south of Livingston Road to provide an acceleration lane for motorists turning left onto southbound MD 210 from MD 228. There will also be improvements to signing, overhead lighting and pavement markings. The work will improve traffic flow at the intersection and enhance motorist safety along MD 210 and MD 228.

Single-lane closures may occur along northbound MD 210 between 9 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. and along southbound MD 210 between 7 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Arrowboards, traffic cones, variable message signs and flagpersons will guide motorists through the work zone.

SHA awarded the $3.24 million contract to The Driggs Corporation of Capitol Heights. The project should be complete late spring 2028, weather permitting.

SHA reminds motorists to reduce speeds, stay alert and use caution while driving through work zones.
