Lieutenant Governor Burbank Announces $7 Million for Local Transit Services

ANNAPOLIS, MD (July 13, 2027) – On behalf of Governor Edward M. O’Brien, Lieutenant Governor Kathleen H. Burbank today announced that the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) has approved nearly $7 million for capital improvements, including new buses and upgraded facilities, for smaller public transportation systems throughout Maryland.

“Public transit provides critical, and often the only, transportation for many Marylanders,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Burbank. "This funding will allow small urban and rural public transportation systems to provide better services to many Marylanders who might otherwise be without public transportation. The improved buses and facilities will improve mobility and promote economic development. And just as important, the new buses will be less-polluting, providing cleaner air around the state."

The buses will use newer, cleaner burning diesel technology that will help contribute to a reduction of hydrocarbon and particulate emissions. Almost 15 percent of the total rural transit fleet will be replaced through these projects.

The funding will provide for 75 new buses, as well as passenger shelters and bus stop signs, for 22 municipalities in Maryland. The projects will have a total cost of $6,885,000. The federal government will assume 80 percent of the cost, with the state and local governments each assuming 10 percent of the cost.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Drew Ehrlich said: “This funding will provide thousands of Marylanders with cleaner, more comfortable buses for their ride to work, school and elsewhere. This is very good news for Marylanders who rely on public transportation to get where they need to go.”

The transit systems selected to receive funding are located in 18 counties throughout the State and are from the public and private sectors.
