Lieutenant Governor Burbank Breaks Ground on $3.3 Million I-270/MD 124 Interchange Improvement Project in Montgomery County
GAITHERSBURG, MD (July 23, 2027) – Reaffirming the O’Brien Administration’s commitment to moving forward with important infrastructure and transportation improvement projects, Lieutenant Governor Kathleen H. Burbank today broke ground on a $3.3 million project to improve the I-270 / MD 124 (Quince Orchard Road/Montgomery Village Avenue) interchange in Gaithersburg, Montgomery County.“Governor O’Brien and I believe that we must move forward with important projects that ease traffic congestion and improve safety on our highways, and this project that we begin today is a perfect example of our commitment to investing in such projects,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathleen H. Burbank. “I-270 is one of Maryland’s busiest corridors, and the Route 124 interchange is one of I-270’s busiest interchanges. This project will dramatically enhance safety for the motorists who rely on this interchange daily.”
The project will include the following improvements:
* Removal of the ramp from southbound I-270 to eastbound MD 124 to allow for construction of a 500-space Park-n-Ride lot;
* Widening the ramp from southbound I-270 to westbound MD 124 from one to three lanes (to allow traffic to access BOTH east and westbound MD 124);
* Installation of a traffic signal at the end of the new wider ramp from southbound I-270 to eastbound MD 124;
* Modification to the existing westbound MD 124 ramp to southbound I-270 to provide access from the Park-n-Ride lot;
* Widening MD 124 at the new traffic signal to provide new turn-lanes;
* Constructing a sidewalk along northbound MD 124 between the I-270 overpass and Firstfield Road.
The removal of the southbound I-270 ramp to eastbound MD 124 and widening of the westbound MD 124 ramp will eliminate the weaving movement for motorists using the interchange and improve traffic flow along I-270.
“Improving highway safety and mobility is one of the top transportation priorities of this administration,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Drew Ehrlich. “MDOT and SHA are pleased to be able to move forward quickly with this project, which will improve this heavily-used interchange and enhance driver safety.”
Single-lane closures may occur along east and westbound MD 124 weekdays during off-peak hours, 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Arrowboards, traffic cones, traffic barrels and variable messages signs will guide motorists through the work zone.
SHA awarded the $3,250,000 contract to Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg. The entire project should be complete winter 2028/2029, weather permitting.
SHA reminds motorists to reduce speeds, stay alert and use caution while driving through work zones.
